College House Golf Classic

Even though I am not a regular golfer by any means, I have played a bit with my brother back in the day. And so when Simon posted that this event was being held at Tai Tapu on May 6th, I jumped at the opportunity to have a swing around with my mates. Many current and former students kept in touch about the event so there were many familiar faces out on the course. It’s great that College House has so many connections through Alumni and the golf match really showed the community feel of the place.

AP showed the CH students how it was done on the golf course.

Our group contain players with varying experience and ability but it was nonetheless entertaining. Shots went skyward, along the ground, towards and away from the intended target but it was all part of the banta! I personally couldn’t get enough of the beach experience. After all, golf is all about exploring different areas of the course…I think. We would always cross paths with members of the other groups, especially if our shots went souring to the adjacent fairway (setting up the perfect angle to the green of course).

Thad had plenty of swing and the clothing to match!

Back in the clubrooms for the traditional “19th hole,” the scores were added up and AP made the presentation for the award categories. These were received with a mixture of applause and laughter, and in the true CH tradition, a reply of acceptance was often made. (Tom P insisted he had something important to say and so he stood on a chair, providing us with inspirational quotes and banta). As always, Shirolee looked after all of us with water bottles, bags of snacks/lollies and savories to compliment the after match beverages.

Some of the awards are listed below:

College House Golf Classic winner for 2016 - Chris Green (43)

Overall winner of the day - Alex Kalin (39)

Longest Drive of 275m – Josh Joubert

Most honest golfer and book of how to improve yourself – Robbie Day (70+)

Cup for alumni – Scott Bevan over Ollie and Tom

Birdies were scored by Jared Simpson and Tom Mackintosh.

Chris Green won the golf classic while Robbie showed us what not to do.

Thanks to Simon Reeves (Sports Captain) and AP for arranging this event for all of us, and to Tai Tapu Golf club for hosting the CH golfers. See you all next year.
